Out of curioisity when were the cavaties produced on the front of the blocks on both sides of the crankshaft pulley and why?

Block mounted water pumps first appeared on the 21 stud engine in 1937.

Alan, I believe "who" is speaking about the cavities in the block casting as depicted in my attached photo. I'm gonna guess this is probably a question best to answered by David Rehor. If anyone would know "why?" he surely is the man. Mike "Kube" Kubarth

The cavities first appeared on early '33 V8 blocks. I believe that the reason is pretty straight forward, namely material and a small weight savings.
