Alan, I believe "who" is speaking about the cavities in the block casting as depicted in my attached photo. I'm gonna guess this is probably a question best to answered by David Rehor. The cavities first appeared on early '33 V8 blocks. I believe that the reason is pretty straight forward, namely material and a small weight savings.
