What is the correct black for accessories such as the fan and generator? Also, what is a good brand of hi temp paint to use on tube type headers? I had used a hi temp silver but it burned off in spots and flaked in other areas.

The fan, generator, and starter should be painted black. I prefer to send exhaust manifolds and headers to a company that uses a coating process. They can coat them black and they last for years.

Is the black supposed to be high gloss, satin or flat?

Satin black. And the coating Tom is referring to, I believe, is a ceramic coating, by Jet Hot. They can coat both the inside and outside if you wish.

In addition to trford8's and ford38v8's comments, back in February I posted a similar discussion that TomO and supereal also responded to entitled '47' Merc Engine Accessory Colors'. The defining answers came from the '41-'48 Ford Book that I believe TomO recommended I purchase (Great recommendation - well worth the investment) and the following comments from a Rusty Davis (EFV8 Technical Advisor) e-mail, cut-and-pasted with his permission. Though it is implied in Rusty's comments, the same applies to the starter, generator, oil-bath air cleaner, etc.: "Gloss Black is what most people paint their oil pan but more correctly it should be a satin finish. The dipstick handle and tube are also black. If you have the boss on the side of the oil pan that the tube and oil filter screw into it would be natural. As odd as it sounds, the blocks were painted before they were machined. That means anything that is a machined surface is natural and everything else is blue. Anything steel - not cast iron- that is attached is black unless it is pot metal such as the carburetor or the base of the fuel pump stand and the fuel pump. The only exception to this rule of thumb is the fan base that bolts to the intake manifold. The entire fan assembly is black. Water pumps are blue unless they have stamped pulleys, then those pulley's are black. The cast pulleys are blue. The transmission is blue with the exception of the shift arms. They are black. It is fairly simple if you think about the source of parts and what is done. Most of the black parts were dipped so the finish paint was thin and runny to cover. That's why satin is more appropriate than gloss."

The Eastwood company has a "chassis black" paint that is very close to the original. It is available in rattle cans or as regular paint. Ford used the same paint for anything that was supposed to be black. It could vary in the "satin" part because as it was used, more was added as they went along. Their site is www.eastwood.com
