Move the front seat as far back as possible, and use a couch pillow over the pedals, as you will be laying on your back in an uncomfortable position. From behind the dashboard, unscrew the connector holding the cable sheath to the speedo. This should be finger tight, but you may need adjustable pliers to start it. Remove the dash-light wire from the back of the speedo . Different years may have different means of holding the speedo in place, but usually will be obvious as to type of clamp. Take care so as to prevent the glass speedo face from falling free upon removal on the hold-down clamp. Alan

To add to what Alan said there are two small brackets with studs holding the speedometer in place. Remove those nuts and the speedometer will come out toward the firewall. There are two sockets for the light bulbs that need removed. Not pleasant but not extremely difficult either. I have a NOS 47-8 speedometer I could take a picture of the back if that would help. I replaced my 46's speedometer last fall and was happy that it really didn't take that long. While you are in there, I would replace the light bulbs for the speedometer. I believe they are #55 bulbs.

ford38v8 offers good advice. I took the speedo out of my '46 Super Deluxe to repair the odometer section, and took a few pics. There are three light sockets to remove, two for lighting and one for high beam indicator. The cable nut is likely hand tight, and there are two nuts with washers that hold the housing in. I suggest you disconnect the battery while working under the dash. First pic is what the speedo looks like internally.

51Woodie, good catch. I forgot about the high beam indicator socket!

And 51woodie remembered an important detail, disconnect the battery first!
