Greg This is only a guess since I have never seen anything in print. My 42 wagon had numbers in crayon or blue chalk on the insides of the doors. Also a model A roadster I have had chalk marked "W"s inside the doors. My guess is that a some point in the body assembly process they designated each body on the line with a number and because they were removing the doors to fit the hinges they numbered them to match the body. That's only a guess, someone may have a better explanation. Regardless there are numbers on my cars too. Ted

Assembly line Foremen would affix either an approval, or a code mark to indicate follow up required on some feature at a future point rather than to stop the assembly line for that one car. As each work station on the assembly line had a specific function to perform, that code mark could simply have identified the work station itself. At the end of the assembly line, cars would be directed for shipment or to an area in which the follow up work was to be performed. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
