Hello, I have a Mechanical pump and an electric airtex 6 volt pump that i use together on my 1936 ford sedan. I've had no problems with this however i see that most of you only use the electric fuel pump to prime then shut it off. Please tell me how and where the shut off for the electric fuel pump is installed? Photos are appreciated. many thanks.

The power supply to the pump should be wired to a momentary contact switch (button), providing power only when the button is pressed in. This type of switch is available from hot rod/race car suppliers such as Speedway.

The switch for the e-pump in my '46 Coupe is located out of sight, on the bottom flange of the dash below the start button. Like others that use them, I only turn it on to prime the carb, after the car has sat for a week or so, then turn it off.

Thank you both for your responses. I have a 2 wire 14 gauge manual "momentary on" button. From reading other posts it appears I need to place the button on the output (power to the pump) side of the ignition switch so the pump will not come on with the ignition off. is it as simple as inserting the button and 2 wires into the neg (power) wire of the electric fuel pump? Do I need to also install a fuse? Your guidance appreciated.

Since you are using a "momentary on" switch it does not have to be on the ignition side of the switch (unless you are concerned about people pressing the switch when they shouldn't). But I would always wire in a fuse or circuit breaker to prevent a short in the pump/wiring from damaging the rest of your wiring.

“is it as simple as inserting the button and 2 wires into the neg (power) wire of the electric fuel pump? “ Yes, is that simple. And I would definitely follow the good advice by Juergen: Power source ahead of ignition switch. In-line fuse at the power source for safety.

(1) Use of a momentary-contact switch vs a toggle switch presents the so-called "double-edge" sword: With a momentary switch, if in an accident or you suddenly become unable to operate the car, the pump will not continue to work if you are unable to hold the switch ..... however the down-side is if your mechanical pump fails one has to constantly hold the button to drive to a destination.... an awkward and perhaps dangerous situation. . With a toggle switch one donesn't' need to hold the switch if mechanical pump fails but the down-side is it could stay on if in an accident etc. Some one here devised a fail-safe arrangement to shut down the system in case of an accident. [personally I look at my all-steel Ford vs today's plastic collapsable cars and don't worry too much about minor accidents]. (2) I prefer powering the pump off the ignition side of the switch since the pump can't run unless you have the ignition "on". (3) I did add a fuse to my system.

Double throw Switches are available with constant on in one position and momentary in the opposite position. The best of both worlds. https://www.amazon.com/Morris-70270-Momentary-Contact-Terminals/dp/B005GDG2M6/ref=asc_df_B005GDG2M6?mcid=b4a1b7095abd3333a9bb6f5c4d36b9f5&hvocijid=17684911011567093579-B005GDG2M6-&hvexpln=73&tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=721245378154&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17684911011567093579&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9058367&hvtargid=pla-2281435177618&psc=1
