My 48 2dr sedan with it's 239 sat most of summer, now I can't get the car to idle. I have lots of gas coming through the spray nozzles, tried pouring Marvel Mystery Oil, all I got was backfire and huge flame up through carb throat.Where should I start looking, any ideas .Johna

How old is the fuel in the tank? Gasoline left long periods of time without adding a storage additive deteriorates . Adding anything else to old gas just makes the problem worse. Siphon the tank as empty as possible, then refill with fresh gas. If you have used fuel with ethanol added, without replacing any rubber parts in the carb, it is probable those parts have become swollen and/or sticky, and will need replacement.

I would do what supe real says and also try running SEA FOAM CARB CLEANER, though the fuel system you can make a line up from the intake line of fuel pump using a made up fuel line into the SEA FOAM can start the engine should run on the SEA FOAM, hope this helps 37Ragtopman

Most of the time when a spark ignition vehicle refuses to run right, the problem is with the ignition system. If you have fresh gasoline in the tank and the fuel is reaching the carburetor, I would consider giving the car a good ignition tune-up. Install new properly gapped spark plugs, a new condenser and new properly gapped and setup points. Check to make sure all of the ignition wires have low resistance. Be sure the distributor caps are good and attached properly.
