What is the correct oil to use in a 1953 Borg Warner OD unit? There are a lot of conflicting opinions going around. Thanks!

The oil I use in my '53 O/D transmission is NAPA SAE 90W Mineral Gear Oil API GL-1. It comes in 1 gallon containers under part no. 65-201 and sells for about $15. Your local store may not have it in stock but they can order it for you and have it in about one day.

Thank you! How long have you been using it? Do you use the same oil in your 3 speed?

I have been using this oil since I got this car about two years ago. Yes, I use the same oil in the 3-speed. The two units share a common oil supply chamber even though there are individual fill and drain plugs for each.

As carcrazy notes, the lubricant chambers in the Ford Transmission/OD units are connected. I understand that those Trans/OD units were manufactured by Ford based on BW OD designs. My BW R10 OD is a separate unit from the transmission. Many years ago a former BW service/repair man told me use 140 in the BW OD. I use Sta-Lube brand purchased from Amazon. I could use 140 (GL-4) in my tranny but prefer the lower viscosity 95 for better shifting in my northeastern temperature climate.
