Does anyone have a picture or drawings of what an early ‘47 Mercury on/off lever switch assembly look like? I am looking to understand what is inside the Bakelite box, before opening it up. I suspect that something is corroded or wore out inside, as the engine sometimes shuts off, and if I flip the switch a few times, I can stop the shutdown. Much Thanks!

Maybe some of these pictures of ignition switch components will give you an insight into how the switch is assembled. https://cgfordparts.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=ignition%20switch&finder%5B1%5D=4771&finder%5B2%5D=4886&finder%5B3%5D=5094&find=find

Moonman, just go for it, it's not rocket science. Open it up and you'll immediately see the problem and can make an effort to reface the worn carbon rub plate, make a slight bend on the brass switch to make better contact, or replace the whole switch itself.

Thanks, I was worried about tiny parts, tiny springs, and working in a cramped space…. I agree that I should get over it and open it up to see what’s going on! Sounds good. -Fred.

I got it off, and am happy to report that after years of chasing random shut offs, and occasional hard starting, that I believe I’ve found the cause! Now, I just need to reassemble it with new parts…
