My 1940 Ford Deluxe speedometer fluctuates wildly and the odometer is stuck at 99999. I want to remove the instrument and get it repaired. Are there step by step instructions to remove the speedo? Thanks, Jim
Thank you Jim

Easy task if you are flexible. Disconnect the battery. I find it easier to remove the entire instrument cluster. However, you may remove only the speedometer if you desire. Only the speedometer? Remove the speedometer cable, then the five screws holding the gauge to the cluster. Tip the speedometer up a little and then tip outward at the bottom to remove. I think you will find it is a pita to remove and especially to reinstall those screws with the remainder of the gauge cluster in place. To remove the entire cluster: remove speedometer cable and all wires going to gauges. There are four attachment points for the cluster, two at the top, two at the bottom. If I recall correctly, 3/8" socket does the trick. You will notice there is a rectangular (about 3/4" x 2") metal "washer" that is beneath each hex nut. That special washer holds the cluster in place. Remove the hex nuts, remove the washers and remove the cluster.

After you get it out I recommend Rusty at Speedometer Service in Colorado for the repair. He repaired the SW unit in my '39 p/u. He doesn't work on all speedometers that Ford used. Worth contacting him to see if he can repair yours. IMO. He is reasonable with fast turnaround and fair shipping costs. Again IMO. Plus he is an Alliance Vendor on the HAMB. https://www.speedoservice.com/ 6916 Maram Way Fountain Co. 80817 719-632-3165 rusty@speedoservice.com
