Took it apart and found the front roller bearings in bad shape. The part number stamped on them is 18-10164. Made by Timken and have the Ford script. The Green Book does not show that part number. C&G and Mac's appear to have replacements but I'm not sure. They show part number 18-10094. That number agrees with the picture in the Green Book. The only number I can see on the generator is 14 and an M with a mansard roof over it on the mounting fork and that is where the bearings are inserted. Can someone assure me that 18-10164 and 18-10094 are the same bearings? oldford2 07-24-2011 @ 8:09 AM reply profile send p.m. Member Posts: 275 Joined: Oct 2009 I think if you take it to a NAPA store they will match it up with the correct bearing. A couple of years ago I took the bearing from our 46 generator to NAPA and they offered a choice of 2. One was around $3 and the other was around $12! Years ago, they had people that could help you, but, now, they are more interested in sales to their volume customers. I always get my bearings at an industrial bearing supply place. Friendly group of folks. supereal 07-25-2011 @ 11:43 AM reply profile send p.m. Senior Posts: 6819 Joined: Oct 2009 Most of the time, if you ask for a bearing for an old car, the counter kids at the auto parts stores are flummoxed. Remove the bearing to see if it has a number on it. If not, they may be able to match it with one in stock. We get ours from either a bearing specialist, or the electric motor shop next door. Dolman 07-25-2011 @ 12:03 PM reply profile send p.m. New Member Posts: 177 Joined: Dec 2010 Dr. Super, the bearing issue is now moot. Took a good look at the rear bushing and it is badly scored. That end of the armature shaft is also not as smooth as I think it should be. Furthermore, the insulation on one of the wires from a brush is rotted where it comes out of the field coil. Diagnosis: The generator has more ailments than I want to deal with and I can get a rebuilt for about $150.00 plus the ripoff shipping cost to Alaska. Thanks to all for your suggestions. 37RAGTOPMAN 07-25-2011 @ 1:54 PM reply profile send p.m. Senior Posts: 1992 Joined: Oct 2009 Dolman you can contact Charlie Schwendler he reuilds GENERATORS plus a lot more, and is a V8 MEMBER, and advertises in the V8 TIMES and is in NY STATE and was at SARATOGA SPRINGS, his phone number is 716-662-9159 and is reasonable, hope this helps 37RAGTOPMAN 40 Coupe 07-26-2011 @ 5:26 AM reply profile send p.m. Senior Posts: 1801 Joined: Oct 2009 I agree with 37ragtopman, Charlie has a replacement bearing and spacers for the front of the 34 Generator his replacement takes no other modifications to the generator and has a much higher load rating and is sealed so there is no need to ever lube the bearing again. His bearing is most likely lower in cost than the two original bearings and races together.
