Thanks for the advise, the left side is out, I will tackle the right side tomorrow. The vise grip idea was helpful, I would not have been willing to use the bigger hammer with my hands in harms way. Thanks for all the help.

It is likely that the king pins will resist efforts to drive them up and out. That's where the "bigger hammer" comes in. If you can, raise the front of the car high enough so you can get a good swing, and place a good punch (drift) under the end of the pin and swing the hammer upward. It is best to hold the punch with ViseGrips, unless you have better aim than I do. If you have an air tool, sometimes they will shake them. Badly worn or rusted pins tend to hang up in the axle end, taking a lot of "persuasion".

To remove the king pins: Remove the wheels and brake drums remove the backing plates and suspend them to relieve stress on the brake hoses Remove the nut holding the locking bolt drive out the locking bolt take a picture of the spindle and king pin so you can reassemble the parts in the correct order drive out the king pin from the bottom take the spindles and the kit to a machine shop to have the bushings pressed out, new pressed in and reamed to fit the new king pin. reassemble. If I forgot something, another poster will help out.

Take the spindles, bushings, and the king pins to a good machine shop to have them fitted, then bolt it back together.

I am getting ready to install new king pins on my 48 ford sedan. I have never installed king pins, but I do have a lot of mechanical experience, have done steering/suspension work, but it is all later model, ball joints etc... I cannot find any installation instructions and don't want to just "get a bigger hammer". What are the basic procedures for this job?
