My 49 V8 was recently tuned, carb gone through, power valve replaced, ignition gone through - all the good things. Starts hot or cold on 1/4 turn. Idles smooth at 500 RPM, accelerates very smooth with pull on the throttle rod. Good response if you snap the rod. However, it lacks the old get up and go. Very slow to get up to speed for a normal shift from first to second. Slow to climb to adequate speed for shift from second to third. I must have the accelerator floored until these speeds are reached to cruise at 30 MPH All suggestions are welcome.

Bill: I suspect the gas line is partially blocked. For many years, we didn't see bad gas lines, then came the "oxygenated" fuel which not only attacked the copper coaing of the line, but loosened dormant deposits in the tank. It is a kind of "running out of gas" situation.

It sound like your advance mechanism is not working properly. Did you disconnect the vacuum advance when you set initial timing? After setting the timing did you reconnect the vacuum advance and check to see that it was working. Your timing light will help you diagnose the problem.

Bob, I'm thinking that a slow run-up in a previously quick engine could be caused by a retarded distributor. If it were a lack of fuel, it would buck rather than just accelerate slowly. If it were fuel, it could be a vacuum leak or the wrong main jets installed on the carb rebuild. It's really a guessing game between fuel/air mix and spark delivery in most cases. any disruption in the delivery of any of those three essentials can deceive the most experienced mechanic.

It could be all of the above, or none, I'm sure all would agree, I'd suspect an open or weak condenser, too. Correctly diagnosing car problems s tough enough when the car is in front of you, let alone a thousand or more miles away. Sure makes this "expert" business tough!

We will all know when Silverchief finishes checking out the timing, spark, vacuum and fuel delivery and his car is running good again.

Thanks guys. I will start with checking the timing, and go from there. I just thought of a couple of other really dumb little things that I think could be the problem. If it turns out to be one of those I will slip quietly away into the night....and fess up to nothing.

silverchief, you indicate that you have a 49 V-8. Do you have a 49 motor in your car or is that a typo? The 49 has a distributor that is vacuum operated. Without proper vacuum the car will be sluggish. A weak diaphram in the vacuum unit, a plugged vacuum line or a split/cracked vacuum hose will not allow the proper amount of vacuum to operate the distributor.

Proper vacume must come from the back of an 8BA carb. An older carb cannot be used on these mtrs.Manifold vac will NOT work on these loadamatic dizzys. ken ct,
