Tom, Thanks very much. Even though the car is running fine now, I am going to check both in hopes of preventing future problems.

Excessive idling can cause carbon build up on the plugs, but it sounds like your mixture is too rich. The black exhaust pipes and black plugs are the clues. Float level and power valve gasket are the prime suspects for rich mixture. The gas should not leak out of the carb bowl over a couple of days. If it does, your power vale gasket is leaking.

Pulled old plugs. Several years old but less than 2,000 miles. Not badly worn but coated with carbon. Installed new Champ RJ14YC as recommended, gapped to .28 I had to check the registration to be sure it was my car. Unbelieveable! Solved a multitude of "problems," including the poor acceleration. Very smooth, plenty peppy, quiet idle, a pleasure to drive. For 14 bucks I think I will do this every Spring. Thanks guys.

Reading through the thread, I don't see that you have pulled a plug wire and held it next to a head bolt to see if you are getting a nice blue spark at least 3/8" in length. Also, are you seeing the timing advance as you rev the engine while watching with the timing light (while being careful to avoid the fan, of course)? I agree with the earlier posts that this sounds like a distributor/timing problem (plus the most recent work was a tune up).

Bill: I know this is a "crazy shot-in-the-dark" SWAG*, but have you checked the choke cable? Another SWAG* is that the mesh in the pre-cleaner portion of your oil-bath needs a good rinsing. It just sounds like your motor just isn't getting enough oxygen; sort of like this old fart. Dan * Systematic Wild-Assed Guess

Check the fuel input pressure at the carb. If it exceeds 3 pounds, it is likely that it is swamping the float needle and flooding the carb, and be sure that the float hasn't sprung a leak and is partially filled with gas.

Mechanics manual lists causes (among others) as: Over rich mixture - I set idle screws with tach, stopping each at highest rpm. Weak condenser - no previous indication of problem. Bad float level. Level was set when carb was rebuilt couple of months ago. I could check it with template from V8 Times, but hope to leave that as last resort.

Checked air cleaner oil level - slightly below level called for. Pulled a plug. Covered with black soot. Now what?

Most recent thing done - raised level of oil in my oil bath air cleaner couple of weeks ago.
