Alan, I have changed the starter on my '46, 59AB, and had no issues. What do you mean when you posted, the "Bendix spring is misaligned?

The"noise" and thud after the "not easy to get in" tells me that your Bendix spring is misaligned , engaged and binding on the flywheel gear. Before removing as advised above, try loosening the bolts one turn each, and giving the starter a good solid rap with a mallet. If that results in a "noise" and a bit looser, tighten the bolts and give it another try. One additional point to check, be sure that the front clip mount to the oil pan is in place, or the Bendix is likely to bind up again. Alan

Did you paint the pan while it was off? Paint will act as insulation preventing the starter from getting a good ground. Remove and replace again.

Just replaced my starter. It was out of the car for new pan gasket. It wasn't easy going back in but I was able to get it to mount flush and tighten the bolts. When I tried to start the car it the starter made a noise and thud. Only did it very briefly. Put my hand on the starter when it was turned on and I could feel it was trying to kick in. My thought is to remove and replace again. Any thoughts Thanks
