Replacing the thermostats on a 1946 flat head V8 super deluxe convertible. The ones that were in the car had a long spring on the bottom that went into the block. Bellows to the top. Was having issues with heat so I decided to replace. Got 2 new ones from C&G. Reading the description on the invoice and it has 37-48 pass merc/37-47 PU v-8. It was a real bear to get it into the hose!! Just put one in so far. Was thinking perhaps I ordered the wrong thermostats from C&G ? ( Was told by them they would work) I then ordered 2 from Century-Hot rod. There description said the thermostats were for Ford Flathead 1937-48 and were the new modern type of thermostats'. They are smaller than the C&G thermostats and fit in the block to radiator hose way more easily! Has anyone replaced the thermostats in a 46? If so how did they fit/work? Thanks tom

Tom, the correct thermostats are a bit larger in diameter than the diameter of the cylinder head outlet. The proper way to install was to set the thermostat in the head outlet and slip the hose over it. The designed interference is what kept the thermostat in place. You may very well find that the smaller diameter thermostats will move within the hose and cause issues. Some guys drill two small holes near the outer edge of the modern thermostat (180°) apart and place a small wire in each hole and drape the other end of each wire over the head outlet. Once the hose is installed, the hose clamps over the wire and holds the 'stat in place.

or just add another clamp in front of the thermostat to pinch the hose.
