I changed oil on my 37 Tudor and I went by the original manual for oil capacity and it stated 5 qts. I read the dipstick afterwards and it read high. Should I go by dipstick or manual? Also what type of oil are you guys using? Thank you.

Which engine does your '37 Ford have? The manual states that the oil capacity of the 85 HP engine is 5 quarts while the capacity of the 60 HP engine is 4 quarts. The oil that I use is a conventional Pennzoil SAE 30 High Detergent Oil along with an additive to provide the proper amount of ZDDP to reduce camshaft and valvetrain wear. One additive that provides the proper anti-wear components is Red Line Engine Oil Break-In Additive. If you don't want to have to add additives to your oil, you can use Valvoline VR-1 Racing Motor Oil which is available in several mono and multi-grade viscosities. This VR-1 oil also contains the proper amounts of ZDDP.

That is not unusual. When I drain my oil, get 3-1/2 to 4 guarts out., so that is all it will take to fill. Others have posted similar experiences. I go by the dipstick. Not good to over-fill. I think the capacity figure in the book applies to a brand new engine.

I always use 5 quarts to fill the pan. That is what the Owner's manual calls for.

TomO as always has offered you precise information. Your engine was designed to be filled with five US quarts. The fellow that responded stating his held 4 1/2 quarts has an issue or two with his engine. The dipsticks have often been changed and as such may not read correctly. Very often, the dust "washer" that should be present just below the dipstick metal shield is long gone. This 'washer" was made from dense wool and was about 3/16" thick. Last and also very common is the oil pan has a lot of sludge in the bottom. Given some thought, it's easy to visualize how any and all of the aforementioned possible issues could affect the true level depicted on the stick.
