  7. VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
  8. EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

    http://donclink.com/deuce_75_1/images/dscn2950.jpg

Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)

My ‘35 sedan was converted to 12 v with an alternator before I got it. The alternator went bad and I am replacing it with a new one. I also had to buy a new bracket. The new alternator on the new bracket is 1 1/8 inch higher than the old one so the stock belt is too short. Please advise if you have cxperienced this problem and solved it. Also looks li I will have to demon the radiator hose to get ny let on?

Before you proceed, see if your fan will interfere with the radiator when you raise the alternator 1 1/8". If the fan will not hit the radiator, you can just buy a longer belt.

If the fan will hit the radiator, you will have to have the old alternator rebuilt.

Okay, thank you for the reply. How much tension should I have on the belt when installed. The one that was in there before was very tight.

To get the proper sized belt for your new alternator: take a piece of clothesline or other rope and run it over all of the pulleys, cut the rope to the proper length, and measure the length of the rope to determine the length of the belt you need, take your new alternator or the drive pulley for it to a good local auto parts store to determine the cross section of the belt required.

The diameter of the alternator pulley is important - it should be approximately 2.5" in diameter to spin the alternator fast enough to charge at idle and low engine RPMs.

You may not be able to use an alternator mounted fan due to clearance conditions. In that case, you will need to use an electric radiator-mounted fan to cool the engine.

I measured the length and it comes to 53 1/2 which is the length of the 40-8620 belt I have. Because of the increased size of the new alternator, it appears I might be able to get the belt on if I remove a radiator hose on one side so I can cock the alternator a bit more.

The fan is slightly touching one of the radiator hoses as it rotates. It is either end of one of the blades. There is a slight curve in that radiator hose and it is not a smooth surface so a different hose might cure the issue.

Your thoughts?

If the fan is that close to touching a radiator hose, I would be worried. As the car is driven the engine will move around and the chances the fan will contact the hose increase.

One possible solution, in addition to the one you have mentioned is to shorten the fan blades by about 1/2" each and then have the fan dynamically balanced.

I don't have a '35 but I'm surprised the replacement alternator is that different. Mine had a GM style alternator that had a range of 5 to 6 amps. Because I was considering installing an electric radiator fan I replaced it with another GM style that puts out 11 - 12 Amps and it fit fine with no changes. (Related) Regarding alternators I had a difficult time buying/finding a replacement alternator that didn't put out voltage spikes above the maximum i.e. damaging my electronic modules. I finally had my local electrical shop bench test my purchase before installation.

Is the new alternator setting so high because it is resting on the top of the intake manifold? Or is it because the mounting bracket slot is not long enough to allow the alternator mounting bolt to go any higher in the bracket? If the slot is too short to allow the alternator to be mounted lower, the slot in the bracket can be lengthened.

The GM 10 SI Alternator (63 amp) that I am using on my '37 Ford Flathead V-8 has a diameter of about 5.5". Couldn't package the alternator mounted fan on this application so went with a 14" diameter electric fan mounted to the radiator.

Thank you, I like your idea of lengthening the slot. Looks like I could add about an inch without the alternator touching the intake manifold.
