Out for a nice drive tonight and once home shut the 1949 off to open the garage door. Turned the key on, pushed the clutch petal in, and hit the starter button --- and all I could hear was whir. I take it that the bendix is stuck in the retract position. Any hints or do I have to pull the starter. Great thing about old Fords -- you can always push them and pop the clutch in second gear.

Give it an attutude adjustment with a BFH. Easy fix unless the spring is broken.

PULL THE STARTER!! I had that happen once on one of my 1950 cars; I pulled the starter; and lubed the spiral on the shaft that engages the gear, with the the flywheel. Put the starter back on; Bingo; it worked! If the spring is broken it's an easy fix; undo the tabs on the two lock nuts , take those short bolts out, put the new spring on, install the two bolts, and bend the tabs down to keep them from loosening, and re- install the Starter motor. Regards, Steve Lee

Thanks guys. Both suggestions were also made by local 'mechanics' Thinking that the removal is the way to go, just to check it out, and since it is 'almost' storage time here in the frozen north, checking it out will make for a much better spring (no pun) driving time.

While you have it out, check the rear bushing and brushes. If you feel any wear in the rear bushing, have the starter rebuilt. With a Rouge car, you have no idea when the starer was last serviced, so it is a good idea to check it out. I wish that I had checked out mine before the drive to Auburn in 2019. I hadn't checked it since 1980 and it failed on me at Auburn.

It is out. The generator rebuilder is closed for the weekend, so first thing on Monday. Heard that I need to check my parts shelves if it is the bendix as the new ones are not reliable. Spring is not broken, but may have some excess lubrication and dirt. You are right Tom -- the starter is the original one. About 31000 miles on it when engine out, and now there is 56000. When the engine was rebuilt, I just cleaned it and slapped it in. By the way, it is a lot easier to install when the engine is out.

Which is the correct for servicing the spiral? Some say lube it, and some say don’t. When I asked the “old fellow” in the shop why they hadn’t lubed the spiral, he said, “the lube will collect dirt and eventually it will jam up”. My starter is still working after three years and lots of starts.

Lube will in fact collect debris.

If you want to replace just the spring Mike at Third Gen is currently listing them on EBay. https://www.ebay.com/itm/351934893338 He also lists USA made original style Bendix's as well on his web site. https://thirdgenauto.com/ Vanpelt sales also lists USA made ones. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/ Last one I bought was a USA made one from Joe's Antique Auto. https://www.joesantiqueauto.com/
