hi 3rd brush did this happen all of a sudden, HOW is the cutout, it should kick in at high idle, maybe stuck open what does the ammeter read, ? not moving maybe it is defective, try a hand held volt amp meter to check the electric system. you might have a loose or dirty connection along the way, never rely on a original ammeter it is a gauge not a instrument, is this with the lights on ? and at idle ? what happens when you increase the rpm. the generator should start to increase the voltage when speed is increased, if you have the original owners manual, it does have instructions , if the commutator is dirty, does the generator spark while it is running at high idle ? brushes worn down ? if you can clean the commutator with very fine sand paper on stick [while idling ,BECAREFULL ] gluing the paper to the stick. , till commutator is shiny copper, and a spray can of electric motive cleaner, this might help. hope this helps, 1937 Ragtopman CERTIFIED AUTO ELECTRIC in OHIO rebuilds generators and starters if you have any problems
