I'm trying to figure out how the remove the casing...the trip odometer stem is bigger than the hole. Does the knurled head unscrew? Thanks!

The stem unscrews on a '36 odometer, so it may be the same for a '39.

The entire stem unscrews, which I discovered the hard way. I had assumed it was a press-in fit, so I pulled the stem out, only to realize I'd yanked the gear off the end. But fortunately, I was able to straighten the gear and solder it back together.
