Thanks all. Alan, I have an early production car. I have NO hole in the firewall for the tab/ear that was added to the hold down frame in February 1937. It looks like the correct piece for my early production car would be 40-5165 (a carryover from 1934) or 40-5165-A (the new part number for use on early 37 production). 40-5165 became 78-5165-A1 when tab 78-5167 was added. My original firewall has no hole for the screw that attaches to the battery holder tab. I'll order the repro piece. Thanks to all. TonyM. . . . 78-730B

Part number for the '37 Hold-Down is 78-5165. This is what you need (picture) from Bob Drake > https://www.bobdrake.com/FordItem.aspx?Item=78-5165

You can order the hold down at C&G 800/266-0470. The same [art was used 33-38. The part number is 40-4165-A, about $15

Tony, The hold down you picture is Ford, but is for a '39 DeLuxe. The '37, '38. and '39 Standard does not have the nut & bolt, but does have a vertical, down-turned ear, welded at the center of one long side. This ear has a threaded hole to accept a bolt through the firewall from inside the car. (Look at your firewall and dash insulation). This ear also has a folded down tab at the top, which extends over the top of the battery. There were three designs of the hold down clamp, all three slightly different, but having the above stated specs.

That photo is of a 39 deluxe battery clamp PN 91A 5165. 37, 38 and 39 standard clamps are all pretty similar but are non-adjustable.

TonyM; It looks like my battery hold down bracket in my 1949 -- except for the bolt on the one side. I agree, that it does not match the hold down shown in the 1937 Ford Book.
