A starter solenoid makes a good high amperage relay. If the original relay is a double pole double throw type that reverses the motor, you will need a similar substitute. For my convertible, which uses a hydraulic top system, I couldn't find an adequate relay that would handle the power, so I devised a control box using four starter solenoids. It works perfectly on the 6 volt system. A 12 volt system would require solenoids rated for that power, of course.

Craig, here is a link to an expired listing on E-Bay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1953-55-FORD-amp-MERCURY-CONV-MOTOR-RELAY-N-O-S-/112413691566?hash=item1a2c60ceae%3Ag%3AW3cAAOSwaEhZFMCN&vxp=mtr&nma=true&si=IGj4hHX%252BkRXcZTMIk851Oz7GglY%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557 The man may still have the relay, try sending him a message. Does your relay still pick? if so, you may be able to open the case and dress and adjust the contacts. If the coil is open, you may be able to repair it. If it is shorted, the coil will have to be rewound or replaced with a similar coil.

The 52-53 Ford's & Mercury's used a motor driven screw jack arrangement to raise & lower the convertible top. The top motor was actuated by a large relay mounted under the rear seat cushion. Is there a replacement or substitute relay available from current suppliers. If not has anyone repaired this relay.
