Generator overheated and burned

Hi My generator was overheated and the truck died Tried to start with a new battery. Could anything else be damaged so that the ignition died

check the voltage regulator if it has one, if it has a cutout relay, check it.

Yes, you may have burned the ballast resister or more likely the coil. What year truck do you have?

Check to see if you have voltage at the input to the coil. It would be around 6 volts with the points open or around 3 volts with the points closed and the ignition switch on. Tap (press momentarily) the starter button to see if it changes from one voltage to the other. If it changes, check the spark at one of the plugs as the engine is turned over by holding one of the plug wires near a head nut with insulated pliers or screwdriver.

The most common cause of a burned up generator is a direct short to ground, either in the generator, or the circuit to the regulator. The last one we fixed was caused by the failure of the insulator on the output stud, which had cracked and allowed the output to short on the case.

After the voltage regulator shorted on my brother's '56 Buick I learned about fuses to prevent the damage to the harness. They are on eBay.
