FORUM RULES: Users agree to these Rules when using Forum.

The site administrator reserves the right to change the terms and conditions of the user agreement without prior notice to the user. It is the responsibility of the user to regularly review the terms of this agreement.

The user agrees to the following terms:

  1. All information that you provide to us for your membership is correct.
  2. You will not use your membership to spam, harrass, or exploit other members in any way.
  3. Vulgar, Abusive, Racist and Sexist Language will not be tolerated.
  4. Commercial-type sales postings will not be allowed.
  5. No mass posting or flooding of the boards is allowed.
  6. No Advertising of parts or cars; no Ebay or business/commercial ads (please use the "Classified" for ads Wanted or For Sale).
  7. VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
  8. EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

    http://donclink.com/deuce_75_1/images/dscn2950.jpg

Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)
  9. HOW DO I SHOW MY EMAIL ADDRESS ALONG WITH MY USERNAME? You can LogIn on the Forum, and select PREFERENCES. On this page Members can add optional information such as their City,State, Country; Occupation; Hobbies: list a Homepage; list AOL Instant Messanger Handle; Signature; "Make Email Address viewable to others;" and even change the number of Default Topics shown on a page. WHEN others click on your profile, they will see this information.

You did not cause any discontent. I am always willing to give my opinion on Mercury cars and other subject that I know something about.

Thank you Tom, you have been the only one (pretty much) that seems to have a good knowledge of Mercury's, sorry IF I presumed you an "expert", I am trying to learn as much AS I can from the most knowledgeable people I can find and I did not mean to cause any discontent. Thank you once again for what you have shared. I greatly appreciate it!!!

I don't presume to be an expert on the 1939 Mercury, as what I know is derived mostly from Ford literature. I have seen a few original 1939 Mercurys, but did not examine them and take notes. I sold all of my 1939 literature to a Ford guy back in the 1980s and donated all of my 1940 stuff to the Foundation Museum. so most of my opinions are based on my memory and other literature that I have collected since.

The plastic coating used on the handles was semi-transparent. This gave the handles a metallic look. Along with the tendency of the plastic to yellow with age, this could provide the gold look you are seeing.

I have seen both body color and black wiring loom covers on original 1940 Mercurys. So I don't believe that all of them were black in 1939 or 1940.

The 1939 Mercury probably had a lot more changes than the 1940 Mercury and I know that there are 1940 changes that I do not know about. The glove box lock could have been one of the changes.

Here are two photo's, although not as clear as I would like them and both of Convertibles and one much more distinct than the other.....BUT one - BOTH appear gold finish, the other is clearly one of each.

Also, I was told that the wire loom cover on the firewall was "supposed" to be Black!! Clearly, an assembly line photo showing the cover as body color? Another difference in our car is the glovebox lid, note NO chrome surround around the entire lock/finger pull section....Ours is not broken nor ever a sign of it having such? I have lots of smaller, not so noticeable differences & question I have seen for 39 Mercury's that I would love to get your opinion/ideas about.

Thanks for sharing the photos.

My opinion on the gold color is that the plastic coating has yellowed giving the brown a golden color. This is just like the green 1940 handles.

Your door panel photos show that my description of them is incorrect. Your photos show that the door panels had the seat upholstery on the upper part of the panel and that the armrests were covered with the sidewall fabric.

Every thing that I have shows the Cloudmist Gray color as being a spring color. Your car looks like Cloudmist Gray in the photos and i agree that it probably was not repainted. My thoughts (which may be wrong) are that the car left the factory as Tropical Green and has faded to look like Cloudmist Gray. The firewall photos seem to bear that out.

Posted this on the "antenna" post so here goes again, here is why I said gold on my handles......6 of the 8 handles on our car are "gold" finish and two are the "brown" you speak of.

I will shoot pictures of my handles this evening. Our car, as you can see, Is cloud mist grey.....ALL the glass bugs are dated 10-38. Our body# is 1808. As I said there are other early production pieces on our car including the "Ford-Mercury" caps. I would say with certainty that our fenders have been re-painted.......BUT no signs of the body every being painted as there is signs of the paint starting to wear through on the top down to the primer coat...It's cloud mist grey...(????)

I did not find that color listed for the Mercury in 1939 in the V-8 Album or the sales literature that I have. Cloud Mist Gray was a spring color for Ford and was carried over into 1940 for both the Ford and Mercury.

The sales folders show the color of the handles as brown. The 1940 are blue, but as they aged, the plastic yellowed so they turned green. If you have information confirming that they were Gold, I would like to see a copy of it.

Cloud Mist Grey was also available for the 39 Mercury!! This is what I have as far as a color chart. TomO wasn't the original color on the handles "Gold"....over time turns brown??
