Help please guys . 1947 Mercury station wagon ( all standard ) I had a bad noise at constant speed when travelling , worse the faster you go . Stripped the gearbox and found a bad rear bearing on the mainshaft . Rebuit the box and clutch . All back together and the noise is still there . Not quite as bad and the box is much quieter and smoother . Any help or info greatly appreciated . It has a closed or torque tube shaft .

Are you sure the noise is coming from the transmission? It could be caused by something else in the drivetrain like the U-Joint or the rear axle. Even the cable for the speedometer could be the cause.

It might be the Ring and Pinion, or a rear axle bearing.
