If it's an original engine, it would be the same 59AB.

Cliftford is correct. Post-war '46-'48 Mercurys were basically Fords with the Mercury trim package and employed the 59A-B engine. Mercury specific engines began to reappear in '49. Head designations are typically 59A earlier in the '46-'48 sequence and 59A-B later. Perhaps the exact cut-off date is published but I've been unable to find it. My '47 Merc was finished in Jan '47 and has its serial number matching. 59A-B in it.

The 59 AB heads appear as replacement parts in the January 1946 Chassis Parts Catalog. It was released as a replacement head for the 38-44 heads. Rusty Davis may have a date when they were used in production. Tom

Thanks Tom. My reply above came both from my notes from a phone call/discussion with Rusty Davis on this subject (and others) from early 2014 and as well page 5-3 of Chapter 5 of the 41 - 48 Ford book. Rusty indicated no specific date during my call for conversion from 59 A to 59 A-B but perhaps he did/does have that and it just never came up. 'Back then' I didn't know/think to ask the question - I was in the process of converting my mindset from restoration to Rouge preservation and was calling him at the time to confirm originality on the '47. Either that or I simply was sloppy in my note taking. Likely the former - worth a call as you suggested to Sam. Strongly suspect though given Sam's talking '48 that 59 A-B is correct unless Ford's then FIFO program allowed dated inventory to be used that far into the 3-year model period. That's good information that you've provided as well - adding it to my file.
