  1. All information that you provide to us for your membership is correct.
  2. You will not use your membership to spam, harrass, or exploit other members in any way.
  3. Vulgar, Abusive, Racist and Sexist Language will not be tolerated.

  6. No Advertising of parts or cars; no Ebay or business/commercial ads (please use the "Classified" for ads Wanted or For Sale).
  7. VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
  8. EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

    http://donclink.com/deuce_75_1/images/dscn2950.jpg

Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)
  9. HOW DO I SHOW MY EMAIL ADDRESS ALONG WITH MY USERNAME? You can LogIn on the Forum, and select PREFERENCES. On this page Members can add optional information such as their City,State, Country; Occupation; Hobbies: list a Homepage; list AOL Instant Messanger Handle; Signature; "Make Email Address viewable to others;" and even change the number of Default Topics shown on a page. WHEN others click on your profile, they will see this information.

The car is a 1940 Fordor Deluxe with a 59A engine...

It has been running great... I've been checking the plugs to keep an eye on how rich or lean it is running.

I've just finished cleaning the cooling system... flushing the block and radiator, new pumps, new lower hoses, etc... I determined that at idle, there was practically no coolant flowing at idle... just off idle, the flow picked up quickly.

The engine was idling at about 500 rpm... I bumped that up to about 600 by turning in the throttle stop screw on the passenger side of the carb... at 600, I was getting a steady stream of coolant... not a lot of volume, but it was flowing...

I attempted to drive it for the first time today... it didn't want to idle smoothly, and was running like it was flooded. I pulled it back in the shop and pulled a couple of plugs... they were black... definately running rich.

I'm assuming that by turning that screw in, I not only raised the idle, but also managed to get into the enrichment/ accelerator pump circuit somehow? What is the proper procedure for adjusting the idle?

Thanks- Bear

The accelerator pump only pumps when you are depressing the gas pedal or moving the throttle by hand-it has no effect on the mixture at a steady throttle settings.

You might want to search this forum for "rich mixture" there should be a lot of information about it.

I would look first at float level, then at whether the jets are correct, and also whether the fuel pump is putting out too much pressure.

Also make sure that the choke is coming fully off when the choke knob is pushed all the way in.

hi Bear
I would take the air cleaner off and us a mirror and a good light light and look down the carb with it running,
if you see gas pouring [ dripping], the float might be stuck or out ot adjustment
clean the needle and seat, and check the float, and you might have dirt in the carb bowl,
also it might be the air cleaner might be dirty and acting like a choke ?
make sure your choke is fully open ,
use a GOOD VACUUM GAUGE, and take a reading, at idle, you should have steady needle,
if you screw in each idle adjustment screws till it starts fo quit, the back out till a smooth idle
do each screw seperate, go back and forth till it idles ,
let us know,
hope this helps 37Ragtopman ,Maine

The original Carb. for the 1940 Ford is the 94 model 91-99, it should work well with the 59 engine. The accelerator link (marked "C" ) in your photo is correct for the 91-99 it has three settings. #1 for summer, #2 winter and #3 for extremely cold. Setting the link to #1 will slightly lean the fuel mixture. Yours is now at #2. There is just one adjustment that adjust the fuel mixture. The two brass screws are for the idle mixture only. With the engine warmed up and choke completely open, adjust each screw slowly for the highest engine RPM and smoothest idle. This can be done with a vacuum gauge on the engine adjust for the highest and most steady vacuum (about 20) If the above does not correct your rich condition, the Carb will have to be removed and float level checked and the jets checked for proper size. The power valve and it's gasket can also effect rich condition. The best rebuilding kit for the Ford, Holley, 94, 91-99 comes from Daytona Co. in Florida. They have a web site.

Thanks for all the information... I'll try to find some time to tinker with it next week.

Just to update:

I've been tinkering with the carb off and on for a few weeks and have finally given up...

I removed the top of the carb and noticed that the float bowl was almost empty... apparently the fuel was leaking out through or past the power valve... there is also some sediment in the bowl.

I have removed the carb from the engine and am letting it dry out in preparation to ship to Charlie in New York for a rebuild...
