A friend of mine has acquired a truck that was overhauled 14 years ago & sat idle since then. He is attempting to start it & has many problems. Up to this point a new battery was installed, the carb which was filled with some kind of bugs & sh*lls was cleaned, and he attempted to start it using starting fluid. He said the starter tuned over quite slowly so there could be grounding & starter problems as well as plug, voltage regulator, fuel pump & many other issues. If this was your truck, where would you start? Thanks in advance for any & all suggestions.

So, bugs and sh*lls in the carburetor!! Did he take it off and make sure that there weren't any pieces in the intake manifold? Sounds like that carb should be overhauled or replaced. Contact Ken Isadore (ken ct) on this forum. Next, I would check all the connections from and including the battery to ground and to the starter itself. Be sure the battery cables are not the skinny ones designed for 12V. You need lots of copper!! Then, I'd take the distributor cap off and be sure it doesn't have critter leavings in it as well and check the point gap. Clean the points if necessary. If it ran fine when laid up, there's no real reason the voltage regulator, plugs or coil should be bad just from sitting. Change the oil, squirt some Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders, be sure you have new clean gas, and give her a go!! Good Luck!! Please keep us informed as you get her up and running!!

Yes to all of DD931's suggestions. Look at the ground straps in particular. Be sure the body is grounded to the engine, and that the starter button has a good ground connection to the dash (Remove any paint).
