Thanks 40 coup for the reply. I have had the cap off since turning over the engine so the cap & rotor should be okay. I now recall your advise on holding the coil wire near ground. I've had some problems with Napa too. I felt no compression of the rotor spring when putting on the cap so I checked it and found it was .050 lower than the old one but that wasn't the problem. It must have still touched.

Do not put the coil high voltage through your voltmeter it will damage it. You can take the spark plug wire, coil high voltage output, off the distributor and hold it about 1/4" to a ground (engine block) if the ignition switch "on" and turn the engine over, every time the distributor points close the coil should discharge spark. Before doing this remove the distributor cap and inspect the rotor. Many of the new NAPA caps have terminals that contact the rotor and break it.

I have a 48 Mercury. I just put my newly rebuilt coil on along with newly rebuilt distributor and a new ignition coil mounted to the coil. When cranking it over I get no spark to the plugs. I have 6.25 V across the coil primary connections with the key on. I did leave the key on for about 15 seconds when testing for voltage. How do you test the coil for secondary voltage just voltmeter between coil output and ground? Need high voltage voltmeter? Mine is only to 1000 V. Thanks, Jeff
