Most times the clock has been wound too tight. I have done the following and have gotten several clocks to work again. Remove the clock works from the case. Use spray tuner cleaner to clean the mechanism, being careful not to spray against the balance wheel spring( it's very delicate). After cleaning I then use a couple of drops of sewing machine oil on the mechanism. I then spin the balance wheel by hand. You may have to do this off and on for a couple of days and eventually the clock may unwind itself. I have "fixed" four 40 clocks this way. I also had one that were not fixable. The odds are with you that you can save the clock yourself,.

I "managed" to fix my 38 clock a number of years ago using parts out of a WestClox "Baby-Ben" alarm clock.. Everything fit, and I even had parts left over.
