My 46 sedan has suddenly developed a case of hard start when cold. Previously would start on half turn even without choke. Ignition system is fine throughout. Most recent work was installation of new vacuum line, carb to distributor, which appears to be working fine upon acceleration. Also I have a small vacuum leak at wiper switch if it is not set just right. Oftentimes I can't hear it Idle is very very smooth. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Bill

Bill, You may just have diagnosed your own problem. A small vacuum leak will be most troublesome in a cold start, as that is the time that a rich fuel mixture is needed most. To double-check if this is your starting problem, block off the line to your wiper and try a cold start. Your wiper is easily removable, and can be rebuilt to better than new. There are several who specialize in Trico wipers, one who I personally can recommend is Kent Jaquith, a long time club member: Kent Jaquith, 2633 SW Obsidian # 15, Redmond, Oregon (541) 923-4319 Clean-Sweep Windshield Wiper Motor Service, Sales and Rebuilding

Almost always, it is the last thing you did that caused a problem. I agree with Alan that a vacuum leak may be at fault, but since you also replaced the line to the distributor, be sure to check that, as well. That vacuum line serves only to keep the point plate snubber pulled back. It was necessary when the car was built because fuel was low octane. Today, it is mostly excess baggage, and we set up the distributors with the spring screw backed off about as far as it will go. Since you report a smooth idle, it is unlikely that a vacuum leak exists, so I suspect you have another problem, anyway.

Thanks Alan. I will call Kent to see if he might have a replacement switch or can repair mine.
