Crack in top of coil

I recently bought a 1937 Ford, 85 HP,and note that there is a crack in the top of the coil. There are no apparent ignition problems. I am considering enlarging the crack into a small v shape and filling the crack with epoxy. My assumption is that the coil case is filled with tar but I would like to seal it to avoid moisture entry. Any opinions on making this repair?

Since the coil works, I wouldn't think your epoxy repair would hurt anything, and since moisture intrusion reduces the dielectric strength of the secondary windings, keeping water out is desirable. The only thing I think I'd do before you seal it up is to bake it at about 250 degrees for several hours to drive out any vapor that is present before you seal it up. Before you do anything however, you might give Skip Haney a call and get advice from a real professional.

When you remove the coil look for electric pencil engraving on bottom may be a date and initials. Could be one of Skips rebuilds. Skip stands behind his rebuilds.

Any ignition coil with a cracked case is on borrowed time, and likely will leave you stranded on the road. You could keep it as an emergency spare, but a new or newly rebuilt coil is a much better solution.
