Tom: There are several out there, but unless you are racing, it is hard to justify the cost. The stock Ford ignition system is, and has always been, a marvel of ingenuity, and if properly maintained, "bulletproof", and usually runs years without attention. Solid state ignition for flatheads has often produced more problems than it solves, due to heat sensitivity and the poorly regulated system voltage in early cars. The main complaint about the stock system is the mechanical-only advance, with a retard system that is somewhat less than reliable, but given the relatively slow turning engines, it does very well. It is possible to upgrade to the later "posthole" type distributor, but it does take a different camshaft, front timing gear cover, and later carb with the correct vacuum outlets. In the end, it is very difficult to see much, if any, improvement in performace.

zuktom: Check out MSD Ignition Part number: 8353. Most racing suppliers can get this unit. MSD has a website that lists their dealers as well.

Alan: Yes, there is an adapter for the front mount distributor. I was referring to the "posthole" type" that needs a drive gear on the front end of the camshaft to install the 49-53 unit .I don't know of any adapters for that, but I haven't seen one. We have removed more than one aftermarket distributor when we found it was the source of a problem. Given the poor quality of parts now, such as points with weak springs and lack of threads, there may be an increasing market for the solid state conversions. I set my stock distributor on our Sun machine, and I haven't touched it for nearly ten years, and the '47 still runs like new.
