When I hit the starter button on my 46 Coupe, all that I got was one click from the starter solenoid. After checking the cable connections on the solenoid, I hit the button on the solenoid...same thing. So as a last resort to removing the solenoid, I took a mallet and struck the starter a few times...hit the button and the starter was working again. Although I am glad it started working, I wonder what is going on here? Despite having a new Optima with clean, tight, and correct size cables for 6-volt, since of lately I have noticed my starter getting slower. So between having to using a mallet and slower cranking, maybe it's time for a new starter.

Thanks. I thought something must be going on with the starter when you need to whack it with a mallet!

Steve, do you have the bracket that attaches from the front of the starter to the oil pan installed? It prevents the starter from twisting and sagging on the thin bolt that hold the starter to the oil pan. If it is loose or missing, it could cause the problem that you described.

A usual problem with a lagging starter is that the armature bushings have worn to the point that the armature drags on the field pole shoes when it is under load. New or rebuilt starters are not hard to find. Expect to pay $150-$200.

Thanks Bob. I think I have a deal on a rebuilt unit lined-up.
