When the transmission pops out of gear as the throttle is backed off, almost always it is due to internal wear. It can be bearings, worn forks, thrust washers, shafts, or worn/damaged gears themselves. I'd bet it is time for the unit to come out for a rebuild. If you don't want to tackle the job yourself, an expert such as Charlie Schwendler in NY does it.

farmer...the procedure you referenced can be found on page 33 of the Ford "1932 to 1936 Engine & Chassis Repair Manual."

All the above answers are OK, as far as they go. The first thing to check, though, is the detent spring itself. It may be broken, weak, or just plain missing. A simple fix with minimum cost and lost time.

You have probably a worn, or broken thrust washer. If you have a Ford chassis parts book they give a very good picture of the transmission. I know, since I rebuilt my 1937 60hp transmission many times --- always popping out of second due to a broken thrust washer. Caution should be a factor, since if the washer is broken, there is a small chance that a piece could be lodge in a gear and ruin more than just a thrust washer replacement.

A worn clutch pilot bearing or bushing is just one of many things that can cause popping out of 2 nd gear, I would pull the trans and rebuild it or send to a rebuilder that advertises in the V8 TIMES,,, you can pull the cover and drain the oil and inspect the gears for wear, also, drain the oil first, let it drain for a few days so all the oil runs off the gears, so you see them better.washing with a solvent is also good for inspection, is the trans noisy ??? my 3 cents 37RAGTOPMAN

You can increase the pressure on the detent within the shifter to help keep the car in second gear. This is not THE fix but merely a "band aid" approach to mask the real problem. Does it work? A little, sure. Depends on how bad your transmission is worn. Disassembling the transmission and replacing worn spacers / washers, gears, etc. is the proper way to fix this symptom.

1936 Ford Pickup transmission wants to popout of second when you let off on the gas pedal. You can hold it gear with the stick. I read a note where you can add another spring and plunger to the shifter but I cannot find out where the infosmation can be found or if it even works.
