before you put the it back together, check the shaft for runout, being true, just incase it might have been bent though the years, my 3 cents 37RAGTOPMAN

Actually,the gear and that strange looking washer move freely and everything else is jammed up. Ill put it against a wall and cover it with a rag before I remove the bolts to insure that nothing goes flying. Thanks for the info...

The spring force is torsional, so it usually isn't dangerous. The spring is held by two special shoulder bolts which are secured by locks with ears that bend to hold the bolts in place. If the drive gear is stuck to the shaft, check to be sure that the starter shaft isn't bent. That will cause the gear to bind on the shaft and not retract when the engine starts. Sometimes the gear sticks because the shaft gets coated with crud. You may be lucky and be able to clean off the shaft and it will turn freely. If not, it s likely an overhaul is next. There is also the possibility that the ring gear on the flywheel is damaged.

The starter drive on my 39 Standard jammed up today causing the engine not to be able to turn (if I wanted to pop the clutch). I removed the starter to find the bendix spring all compressed and jammed together. I ordered a new starter drive and it looks like an easy install. My concern is when I remove the bolts that hold it on to the shaft, is it going to shoot across the room? Im not sure of the steps involved in the replacement process as I do not have any manuals that show it. Any advice would be appreciated . Thanks....
