I have one of the fun projects regulators on my 37 and am very happy with it. It is a true regulator so there is no need to modify your wiring harness and drill holes in your firewall for a two brush generator and regulator.

doning, Contact John Regan at www.funprojects.com . He makes those cutouts and I am sure he can answer most any question you may have regarding the electronics involved. Most of his products are for the Model T but the cutouts span T's, A's and early V8's. Ken in Texas

In theory, a diode could function as a "cutout", except it wouldn't be load sensitive. It would just act as a "check valve" to prevent the battery from trying to "motor" the generator. The solid state unit is marketed as a "regulator" of sorts which, with a three brush generator, would be an improvement over a simple mecahnical relay. The charging system produces a fairly heavy current, and the contacts in the cutout get the worst of it, and become burned and pitted. The really ideal ituation is to replace the three brush unit with the later two brush generator and a voltage regulator.=, but would cost considerably more.

What's the advantage of having a cut-out with a diode in it? Can it be trusted?

not sure where it is made but Fun Products makes the solid state cutout with the voltage regulator inside. Give them a google.

C&G (800/266-0470) says their cutouts are US made. Part# B-10505. They also offer a solid state regulator in a Ford script case, which you might wish to consider. It is a bit more expensive, but should be free of the usual mechanical cutout problems.
