I've got an 8BA that I want to start on a test stand, do I need the firewall mounted starter solenoid to do this. I have an after market 12V starter as provided by SPEEDWAY, don't these have a built in starter solenoid?

The solenoid is just a switch and you need a switch in the system (and it needs to be a heavy duty switch to handle the starter current). Technically you could run the starter using just the cables, but sparks would fly and you might start a fire. I also have a new 12v starter (not from Speedway) and it does require the solenoid. I'd mount a solenoid on the test stand securely. It needs to be mounted to keep the hot cable from touching ground accidently.

The solenoid gives a quick way to disengage the starter when the engine fires up, and prevents damage to the starter and/or the ring gear. Your starter doesn't have a built-in solenoid. If you have a solenoid with two small terminals, besides the large ones for the battery cables, ground one of the terminals and apply battery voltage to the other with a jumper wire just enough to crank the engine to start.

If you have the Speedway mini starter for a flathead they do have their own solenoid attached to the starter.
