It's been a while since I've been on here and it's nice to be back. I recently purchased another 40 Deluxe convertible with the United Air Cleaner oil bath air cleaner. I pulled it off and took it apart but there is no screen or mesh attached to it. Just the lower piece that sits down in the bottom. I pulled that piece out and there is some remnents of oil in the bottom of the unit. Is there supposed to be some mesh in there and if there is, who sells this piece, or can I just take that inside piece out and use a paper filter?

There is mesh in the upper part but the lower part is just metal . Soak the upper part for a few days in K1 to remove old oil and dirt. Just clean the bottom section of any dirt or old oil and refill to the "full line" with clean engine oil.

40coupe has offered spot on advice. Back in 1940 it was advised that the top section be soaked in gasoline. Not as safe as K1 obviously. I soak mine in mineral spirits. Then allow to dry thoroughly prior to reassembly.
