Hello My dad and I started working on a 36 Ford Coupe. Engine has been unseized and now trying to start it with no luck. The car has a new 6v battery, rebuilt carburetor, new spark plugs, new distributor cap, new plug wires, new coil. When we turn the start switch and start button, the car barely turns over therefore no luck with the engine running. We did an oil change, and new filter. It just doesn’t have the power Any suggestions?

Are you using battery cables and ground straps sized for 6 volts, the ones from the auto parts store are smaller and intended for 12 volt systems. Are all of your connections clean? Remember a couple of extra ground straps never hurt. Charlie Stephens

Yes to your questions. Now if remove the spark plugs to see if it turns over it does much faster Spark plugs back in barely turns over. Do you think it could be the starter motor?

Rayrae, Is your battery fully charged? Do you have a 6V starter or a 12V starter? Have you checked the compression in each of the cylinders? Have you tried to start the engine while using starting fluid? If all of your electrical connections are clean and tight and the engine still won't start with starting fluid, you may have a bad wire or switch in the starting system with higher than normal resistance. Once you have tried all of the above and are convinced that all of the items are good, pull the starter motor out to have it checked to see if the commutator, brushes, brush springs and holders, armature, field coils and bearings are good.

Ray, Please identify the engine if you can: How many head studs are there, 21 or 24? Are the water pumps on the heads or on the block? You say you have "unseized" the engine. Tell us what that process entailed, and what you found that caused the seizing. Also please detail for us the sources of, and identify your new parts, the battery, distributor, coil, rebuilt carb, cables and plug wires. Have you had the heads off or the oil pan off? What oil did you put into the crankcase, and what sort of oil filter do you have? Do you have a functioning oil pressure gauge and does it register pressure while cranking without spark plugs? Has the starter motor been off, and if so, has the oil pan been painted at the location of the mounting of the starter motor? These are preliminary questions, the answers to which are required before any diagnosis can be suggested.
