It has been quite awhile since my last post. I was hit by a car while on vacation. Hence my delay providing an update. The starter has been remove and rebuilt by a local individual located through a fellow V8 Club member. The Bendix gear was chipped and worn. I finally got the starter reinstalled and added the starter bracket (starter to oil pan). The engine turns over, but I am not getting any spark. I removed a spark plug wire and did not see any spark when trying to start the engine. Going to back and check all wiring and connections today.

A friend of mine rocked the car while it was in 3rd gear. The Bendix gear was stuck with the flywheel. The starter was then easy to remove. I've located a local individual (highly recommended) to rebuild the starter. An update will be posted once the started is installed.

Try to rotate the starter armature. the gear on the Bendix may be stuck on the flywheel, If you can rotate the armature this may wind the gear away from the flywheel.

when you get the starter out, make sure you rotate the engine and check the ring gear. it might be worn causing this problem when pulling the starter out you may have to angle it to remove it, you might have to take the starter apart , where it is, and put back together when it is out, if you have a enoscope you may want to use it to s see what it is hangine up on, I never heard of not being able to remove a starter. let up know how you made out, with a update, hope this helps 37 Ragtopman

Thanks Tom and all for you guidance. I especially appreciate the safety information. I will be unable to work on the car again until Memorial weekend. I will provide an update at that time.

If the bendix is hung up on the flywheel, the procedure to free it up is to put the transmission in 3rd gear and then push the car backwards. Just rocking the car may not free it up, because you will not be turning the motor enough. If you can push it and the motor turns over, the bendix is not hung up. Get some help as it is difficult to push the car when it is in gear.

Possibly the stamped steel cover on the other side of the oil pan may come off, if not you may have to remove the oil pan to prevent further damage.

Hit the starter end plate hard with a hard rubber mallet, if you can get it starting to come out you can use a pry bar to help it out of the oil pan housing. With the starter body off and the two long bolts removed, there should be nothing to prevent the armature and starter end plate from becoming loose.

40 Coupe, I've applied penetrating oil to the housing connected to the bell housing. I tapped the housing and it did not break loose. I also rocked the car while in reverse and also in first. No luck freeing the bendix. What am I missing here?
