If you have the room, one way to provide a negative ground 12V source for accessories in a 6V positive ground vehicle is to carry a 12V battery in a battery box. This box can either be located on the floor behind the front passenger's seat or in the trunk. The battery box, cables, alligator clamps, cigar lighter receptacle and battery can all be purchased at your local auto parts store. A Garmin does not draw too much current so it will function for a long time on one charge if you use an automotive battery.

I found a supplier of a USB port, that is 6V + ground in British Columbia. The fellow custom built one for my stock 46 Coupe, and it fits in the ashtray. I had to send in precise measurements of the ashtray, and it was built and received within two weeks. I had to drill a hole in the bottom of the ashtray, install the supplied insulating grommet and connect to power. I use it to power my GPS and on occasion, charge my cell phone. My install is shown on the examples posted in the Ford section of the website. https://www.classicchargers.com/product-category/ford-usb-chargers/

You can buy one of the 12v jump starter pack for less than $50 and it will be small enough that you can place it anywhere in the car. Amazon has a large selection running from $30 to a couple of hundred.

You are right TomO, I thought about those, but they can't be hidden discretely in an ashtray.

I have used the Custom Autosound power inverter for many years in all my 6-volt vehicles. They are tiny, so can be hidden out of the way, provide plenty of 12-volt power for phone and GPS, and use a common ground. Used to be able to buy them for under $50. I see Ecklers now carries them for $85. Ken
