There can be a number of issues causing this misreading. Often times, the dipstick isn't the correct piece. Also, there should be a gasket at the boss of the dipstick. That gasket, a very dense wool material is about 1/8" thick. Is the dipstick tube threaded fully into the oil pan boss? Is the oil pan full of "crud". If you are confident the oil pan is fairly clean, I'd suggest you drain the oil completely and refill with the specified amount. Then, mark the dipstick where that level is indicated.

Hi TY: In addition to what Kube has said, if you are confident you have all the correct parts regarding the oil system, there could be one more reason your oil reads high. It has been told to me (on this forum) that when you drain the oil from your flathead engine, about 1/2 quart remains in the oil galleries and lifter area under the intake manifold. So if you then pour back in the factory spec amount of oil (after draining your pan) you now have too much oil in the system and the dipstick reads high. I believe this because when I recently removed the intake manifold on my 37 Phaeton I could see a lot of oil pooled in the pocketed areas of the block around the lifters. I do not believe this 1/2 quart of extra oil is a problem if that is the only cause of your dipstick reading high.
