Glad to hear the filter leak got resolved. But I don't see how that had anything to do with the high oil pressure reading. TomO's post seems to make most sense to me. And if there was an intermittent short on the gauge-to-sender wire, you may see it happen again.

Thanks again to all who have replied with helpful suggestions. I have learned a lot through this exercise. Finally got time to remove the return line - it was clear. Drained the oil and checked inside the filter cannister for sludge - found plenty. Rodded out the return hole and reconnected the return line, then replaced the oil. New filter and seal installed and finally I'm getting 'normal' pressure readings and no leaks. Pressure now reading 25 - 30 pounds after warmup. The new seal seemed to be a bit thicker than the one I removed - not sure if it was a seal problem all along, but glad to have the "Ramblin' Wreck" back on the road. Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving! Hal

Is the oil leaking from the outer edge of canister? If so, double check the canister lid (top) to make sure there is only one gasket there in the outer edge recess. It is easy to mistake the outer edge seal for the inner groove of the lid itself. If you mistakenly install another gasket over the old one, it will leak.

You can put Permatex or something similar on both sides of the filter gasket. That will help seal it but you will have to do some cleaning when you remove the top to change the cartridge.

I put in a new filter and gasket but still having oil spilling out around the gasket. After several tries to seat the gasket, I gave up getting a good seal. The next step is going to be draining the oil, removing the feed and return lines and trying to blow them out. Will advise if this works. Does anyone know if there is a special trick/method to get a good seat on the filter gasket? It just doesn't want to stay in place. Thanks.

The oil pressure reading is most likely from a grounded wire going to the oil pressure sending unit.

a few questions, on high oil pressure, did you try a different oil pressure gauge , and what is the reading, ? it might be that there was a bad gasket on the oil filter, making it leak ? did you check the sending unit, if it the correct. also the oil pump should have a pressure relief valve built in if it is a 80 lb pump it made be stuck or clogged, lets hear how you made out, 37 Ragtopman ,Maine

Whether the filter is plugged or not has nothing to do with the high pressure, if it had no filter, there would be a pipe plug in the block where the pressure line goes to the filter totaly closing off that flow from the factory!

Here's the photo from the left side. The breather/filler tube is on the back of the engine, as noted by you and others, and has a trumpet cap (second photo). Thanks for helping. Hal Shelby67
