Adding a PCV system to a pre- smog engine is one of the best modifications that can be done to an engine. There are a lot of people that think the PCV system is an unnecessary government mandated to all vehicles made from 1963 on. The main feature of a PCV system is that it will eliminate 95% of the undesirable emissions that an engine produces. The side benefits is that the PVC will eliminate blow-bye, eliminates condensation within the engine and thereby minimizes the production of sludge in the engine, additionally, the introduction of the crankcase blow-bye into the intake system can act as top cylinder lubricant. The 8BA/8CM type of engines are very simple to add a PCV system too because they have a crankcase road draft tube port at the front of the engine where the PCV can be placed, then a 3/8" hose is attached to a good vacuum source that is located below the throttle plate in the carb. There is no need for a hose to be attached to the air cleaner. The '48 and earlier flatheads are a little more difficult to attach a PCV to. From my experience the easiest method is to drill a hole into the intake manifold, large enough to accommodate a thread-in type of PCV, in the front portion of the manifold, that access's the valve lifter chamber, then a vacuum source is located via a plate under the carb or a port in the intake portion of the manifold . Fresh air will be drawn into the engine crankcase via the breather cap located on the fuel pump stand. Some early flatheads have a crankcase breather located on the lower portion of the engine, this breather must be blocked off.

Some of the answers: Engineers think it reduces emissions pulling a vacuum on the crankcase helps reduce leaks If the engine has blow-by, PCV can reduce or eliminate symptoms

I have seen that several people have blocked the vent in the oil pan and added a PCV to their flathead engine. What is the benefit of doing this? (or is there a benefit of doing this?). Inquiring minds want to know (and so does mine...).
