36 FORD GENERATOR was wondering if you attempted to do this with the engine not running ? YOU SHOULD NOT have to polarize the generator, the field wire it controled by the 3 brush. and the charging rate, by sliding it, with the cover off, you do this with the cover band off, [ just be carefull ] generator only puts out electicity when the engine is running or car going over 10 MPH if you drive in the day time, adjust to about 5 amps using a ampmeter, not the one in the car, if possible, if you drive at night adjust highter. maybe 10 amps or a little higher, a lot of this information is in your 36 Owners manual, keeping the battery charged was controlled by the owner and a hydrometer, if battery lost a charge you boosted the charging rate by the 3 brush, hope this helps 37Ragtopman

If your ammeter shows charging when you increase rpms, the generator is polarized. You should not need to polarize a newly rebuilt generator.

I have been trying to polarize my '36 Ford rebuilt generator 6 volt positive ground. I connected a wire with alligator clip to the negative side of the battery and touched the generator and the field wire (hot wire for generator?, but nothing. No spark when I touched. Is it already polarized or what? It is driving me nuts, (short putt). I don't have a clue of what I am afraid to turn the key on lest I burn something out.
