I'm currently restoring a 35 convertible sedan and need some grille info. I have several pictures of an older restoration of a 35 roadster which shows the portion of the grille which is not viewable when the hood is closed painted body color. Is that something that would have been done originally at the factory?

hi Peter in NH I would think under the hood would be painted body color I would get the 1935 RESTORATION book from the club, would help in answering many questions and keep you from doing somethings more then once, hope this helps, 37Ragtopman Maine I guess I read the question wrong, and viewed the photo wrong what I saw was the under the hood was flat black, that what is what I responded to, exposed grill polished, not exposed Not polished but not painted flat black like it is

Peter, If painted at all originally, that area of the top of grille would be painted black, consistent with the original practice used on that area of the grille on '33s and '34s. The idea was to make the chrome in the gap with the front of the hood tops and sides"disappear".

Peter, The 35 convertible sedan was a deluxe car so it had a chrome grille. During manufacturing, the 35 grille was nickel plated and then polished before it was chrome plated. During polishing only the exposed parts of the grille were polished leaving the recessed areas a dull(satin) finish. No parts of the 35 deluxe grille were painted.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I want to get the grille lacing installed at this time and didn't want to discover after that I should have painted that area. Now I just have to come up with a game plan as to the best way to bend the lacing on each side of the top of the grille on its way to the bottom. Guess I'll try my wife's hair dryer as it's such a radical turn.

Both my english built model 48 and unrestored, very original, model 60 have the area of the grill covered by the hood painted black. Don’t know if this was just a UK thing.
