I usually try for about 1/2" deflection half way between the pulleys.

the deflection should be 3/8" half way between the generator and left hand water pump with belt P/N 8BA-8620-B and 1/4" half way between right hand water pump and fan pulley with belt P/N 8BA-8577.

To tighten the belt tension, place a crowbar or tire iron between the top of the intake manifold and the bottom of the generator and pull up on the tool. To check the tension once it is adjusted, apply thumb pressure to each belt while holding a ruler perpendicular to the belt to measure the amount of deflection.

It is important to know that early Fords used belts of an unusual pitch that grip the sides in the pulley. Off the rack belts available locally are often over tightened to avoid slippage, and can result in premature failure of water pump bushings, and other belt driven items.

Is there a belt available anywhere that will grip better to our pullys? Industrial belt?
