This car, a friends, is showing sooty plugs, sooty exhaust exhaust extensions, and it is backfiring when he accellerates. He asked me what I thought was wrong. I told him, that I think that the mufflers are full of carbon, and that it is burning on accelleration, causing it to backfire. .The timing is right on the "dot" on the crank pulley at idle, vacuum is 21, and plugs are Champion H10's, gapped at 30-32, and the vacuum advances the timing properly on the distributor. . Any and all ideas, or theories are appreciated!! Regards, Steve Lee

"Sooty" plugs and tail pipe are usually caused by a rich mixture. They can also be caused by excessive idling. Check the idle mixture screw settings after you replace the spark plugs with a correct set at the gap specified in the Service Manual. Use a vacuum gauge to set the idle. Start with closing both screws until lightly seated and then back them out 1 turn. Connect the vacuum gauge. Start the engine and let it warm up. Adjust the idle speed to 475 RPM and then turn each of the mixture screws in 1/8 of a turn. If the vacuum reading goes lower, back out each of the mixture screws 1/4 of a turn. If the vacuum reading is higher, continue adjusting the screws 1/8 of a turn in the direction that increases vacuum. Both screws MUST be turned the same amount. Setting one side and then the other can lead to an unbalance in the idle mixture. Re adjust idle speed and recheck the mixture. Now that the idle is set correctly, look down the throat of the carburetor to see if there is fuel dripping into the venturi. If there is, the carburetor float is set too high or the power valve is leaking. I would adjust the float so that the fuel level is 1/8" lower and recheck for fuel dripping. If it is still dripping, the power valve is leaking and the carburetor should be rebuilt by a competent rebuilder, like Charlie Schwendler.

Well, he brought the car to me today, and I found out that the idle mixture screws didn'have any effect on the idle at all! He said that it ran perfectly, a while back when I sold to him, installed it, and adjusted it. I told him,"Some how you got some dirt in your lines in this."He went home, came back with a rebuilt one, I installed it, adjusted the idle, and we took it for a test ride. Car ran great for about 3 miles; started to miss; finally quit running. Got out, lifted the hood and it was steaming!! Took the radiator cap off( a 7lb!)- no coolant, radiator leaking!!Got water and nursed it to his home. All his problem was- He had NO TEMP gauge and motor was getting too HOT, causing it to miss, and finally to quit running!! What a day this was!!!

hi Steve when you had the engine running rich, was the air cleaner on or off, I have seen clogged air cleaners make a engine run rich, it might be simple as this, but not to be overlooked hope this helps, 1937Ragtopman
